SAUDI ARABIA
Where It All Began
This is where my journey with photography truly started. I was sixteen, living in Jeddah, and completely captivated by the strange magic of a Nikon FM10, a film camera that my brother got me. It was the first camera that I owned. To me, everything about it was new and felt special—so many moving parts, so many things that could go wrong, and just as many things that could go right.
As a perfectionist at the time, I loved not having control, not knowing how to use it, and not knowing whether a picture was taken or not. It was fun, addictive, and why I never felt the need to use another camera for years. Until accidentally dropping it on the stairs to one of the platforms at Redfern Station.
Film spoke to my slow, intentional nature. I had to trust my eye and wait to see the results. These photographs capture that early wonder.
China
I travelled to China without many expectations and left with two cities etched into my memory, Fuzhou and Beijing.
Fuzhou captured my heart. The people were incredibly kind, and the city moved at a gentle pace with scenic roads and calm neighbourhoods. One afternoon, I wandered through Sanfang Qixiang, the historic district of narrow lanes and courtyard houses. Its atmosphere reminded me of Al-Balad in Jeddah, a place that is familiar and close to my heart. In Fuzhou, I stayed with a friend I had met in Sydney. Reconnecting with him and exploring his home city became one of the most meaningful parts of the trip,we drove to nearby coastal towns and explored places new to us both.
Beijing was my second stop. I spent less time there, but its scale and composure left a strong impression. Unlike the relaxed pace of Fuzhou, Beijing carries the unmistakable energy of a capital. Both cities were beautiful in their own ways, and I left knowing I would one day return.
Morocc0
I spent a summer in Morocco, living with an Amazigh community. It wasn’t volunteering in the traditional sense — it felt more like a cultural exchange. I helped tutor children, joined in housework, and worked on the farm. What struck me most was how much we shared — a native language, threads of culture — and yet how differently we lived.
Along the way, I met incredible people — friends who, even though we don’t talk much anymore, still hold a special place in my heart. They enriched the experience in ways I still struggle to put into words.
I carried my film camera everywhere, trying to capture those quiet, in-between moments. This collection remains one of my most cherished — a record of a place, a time, and the beginning of my love for telling stories through film photography.
Tanzania
Tanzania has always felt like a place of endless discovery. Across multiple trips, I found myself drawn to its vast landscapes, rich wildlife, and the warmth of the people we met along the way. There’s a sense of belonging I feel in Africa, not quite as a local, but as a welcomed outsider. That perspective shaped the way I saw, felt, and photographed.
In Tanzania, I experienced hospitality like nowhere else. At times, I was part of something, at other times just observing, and that balance found its way into my photography. This body of work blends documentary moments with quiet, solitary wanderings. Each frame holds a fragment of wonder, a feeling that there’s always more to see, more to learn, more to feel.
This section is about curiosity, about seeing the world with open eyes and a camera in hand.
Australia
Sydney came with a lot of change. A new city, a new rhythm, and the weight of architecture school pulling most of my focus. Somewhere along the way, photography slipped into the background. It was still there, but quieter like a child peeking out from behind a curtain, unsure whether to step forward or stay hidden.
My work from this time feels uncertain, and maybe that’s okay. It reflects a period of adjusting, of growing up, of learning how to exist in a place that didn’t quite feel like mine yet. The photos I did take are scattered, but they hold something real, a kind of searching, a softness, a need to still see beauty even when I didn’t know what I was looking for.
This chapter isn’t about clarity; it’s about drifting, becoming, and finding comfort in that in-between space.
